The course consists of three modules: Grammar and Texts, Oral Proficiency and The Development of Arabic Literature. In the first two modules, which are taken together, students study different types of materials in Modern Standard Arabic, such as songs, reports, poems, news and prose. The course introduces the basics of Balagha, which students then use along with other analytical tools in the literary analysis of texts. Students use the grammar they have learnt in independent grammatical analyses of various texts. In the module The Development of Arabic Literature, students read articles and listen to lectures. They then complete an independently written report based on a chosen question and a short project plan.
