The course deals with systems for electromagnetic energy conversion consisting of electrical machines and drive systems. Theoretical concepts are covered for various electrical machines and drive systems such as induction machines, synchronous machines, machines with permanent magnets, power semiconductors, pulse width modulation, and alternating current and direct current conversion. This includes how control strategies in drive systems can contribute to backup services to support the electricity grid. Using labs and simulation tools, measurements are taken and analyses are conducted on electrical machines and drive systems. The course includes a project where a combination of machine and drive systems is chosen to suit an application.
