The course provides an introduction to the most common engineering materials within the material classes metals, polymers, ceramics and composites, and their structure and properties, with a focus on mechanical properties. The course addresses different types of material damage related to overloading, fatigue, corrosion and wear. Finally, the course introduces systematic material selection methodology based on product requirements, material properties, manufacturing methods, sustainability aspects and economic considerations.
