The course begins with a historical account of the objects, domains and dimensions of hermeneutics from antiquity to today. Subsequently, the conditions for the practice and assessment of interpretive approaches within the human sciences are analyzed in terms of e.g. intention, convention and context; empathy and experience; suspicion and power. The relationship between meaning assignment and evidence for meaning as well as between legitimate perspectives and rational argument is problematized througout the course.
