<p>Explore how colonialism shaped the economic paths of Africa, Asia and Latin America. This course gives you the tools to understand global development challenges through a historical lens.</p><p>This course introduces you to the long-term effects of colonialism on economic and social development in the Global South. You’ll study how pre-colonial societies functioned, how colonial rule transformed them, and how these changes continue to influence development today.</p><p>Through case studies from Africa, Asia and Latin America, you’ll explore themes such as imperialism, independence movements and nation-building. The course highlights how colonised societies were not passive recipients of change, but active participants in shaping their futures. </p><p>You’ll also examine patterns of income distribution, gender roles, migration and urbanisation, and how these relate to global economic structures. The course is taught in English and is part of the BSc programme Economy and Society. It is open to students with general eligibility for university studies in Sweden.<br/></p>
