<p>Explore how Geographical Information Systems (GIS) can be used to analyse development challenges by working with advanced spatial methods, real data and problem-focused applications.</p><p>This course offers an advanced, application-oriented exploration of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) within development studies. Building on introductory GIS knowledge, you will deepen your understanding of how spatial analysis can be used to examine development-related challenges from a social science perspective. </p><p>The course introduces advanced analytical approaches, including spatial statistics and remote sensing, and focuses on how scientific problems can be analysed in a spatial context. You will work independently with GIS software and learn to critically combine and evaluate multiple data sources. </p><p>Through problem-focused exercises, you apply GIS methods that are central to development research. The content can be adapted to your academic background and interests, allowing you to explore development issues relevant to your field of study. Alongside practical skills, the course emphasises critical reflection on data quality, analytical techniques, and the role of GIS in research and decision-making. </p><p>All teaching is conducted in English and takes place at the Department of Human Geography, in the historic city of Lund. </p>

General eligibility and knowledge corresponding to SGEG16 GIS in Social Sciences - Basic Level, 7,5 ECTS credits. Furthermore, knowledge corresponding to the Swedish Upper Secondary School-course Civics 1b (1a1 + 1a2)/A.
