The course provides an indepth understanding of Christian iconography and its role in European visual culture from Late Antiquity to the Reformation. By combining art historical theory with iconographic and iconological analysis, you will explore how images have functioned as expressions of faith, power, and cultural identity. You will engage with key theorists and analyse works ranging from mosaics and frescoes to illuminations and altarpieces. The course focuses on the symbolism, function, and performative force of images in religious and political contexts. This course is designed for those who wish to deepen their art historical expertise and develop an analytical understanding of the complexity and significance of the Christian visual language within Europe’s intellectual and cultural history. The course is intended for students seeking to explore the relationship between art, faith, and culture. För tillträde till kursen krävs Kandidatexamen i Humaniora samt Svenska 3 eller Svenska nivå 3 och Engelska 6 eller Engelska nivå 2.
