Ordinary Differential Equations and Mathematical Modelling

The course is the basic course in the theory of ordinary differential equations (ODE) with examples of mathematical modeling with ODE from physics, chemistry, environmental problems. In the theoretical part we study existence, uniqueness and stability concepts for ODE, theory for linear systems of ODE, methods for non-linear ODE such as Poincaré mapping and Lyapunovs functions. Students are going to carry out 2-3 smaller modeling projects, in groups of 2-3 people, that includes formulation of a problem, its mathematical analysis, numerical computations with help of Matlab and representing results as a short scientific rapport.

Behörighet

Knowledge equivalent to 60 credits in mathematics, including the courses MMG300 Multivariable Analysis and MMG400 Linear Algebra II, and a course in programming.
