The course consists of an individual project relating to one of these themes: Chinese literature, linguistics, cultural studies, Chinese society, or learning/teaching Chinese as a second language. Students are taught how to conduct research, and they independently write a thesis in accordance with academic formalities. The thesis of between 4000 and 6000 characters is to be written in Chinese. Alternatively, if the examiner so permits, students may write their thesis in English in which case it must be between 5000 and 6000 words. Students defend their thesis at an examining seminar.
Chinese in Speech and Writing IV, 15 credits and Languages, Literature and Culture: Research Methodology and Academic Writing, 7.5 credits and three of the following courses: Chinese Modern Literature I, 7.5 credits; Chinese Linguistics, 7.5 credits; Chinese: Language Learning and Teaching, 7.5 credits; Chinese: Chinese Society, 7.5 credits
