Kursen innehåller grundläggande kunskaper i etnografiskt betraktande, dokumentärt berättande, dokumentärproduktion och dokumentärfilmens historia och relation till samhällsutvecklingen. Kursen behandlar även de speciella villkor som gäller dels för fotografen när man ska filma olika former av dokumentärer, dels för klipparen/redigeraren i klipprocessen. Särskilt betonas aspekten av att medvetet förhålla sig till det man ska spela in respektive hur man ska arbeta med omfångsrikt material. Genom ett projekt praktiseras färdigheter i inspelning av ett dokumentärt filmmaterial.
