The course provides an introduction to the most common engineering materials within the material classes metals, polymers, ceramics and composites, and their structure and properties, with a focus on mechanical properties. The course addresses different types of material damage related to overloading, fatigue, corrosion and wear. Finally, the course introduces systematic material selection methodology based on product requirements, material properties, manufacturing methods, sustainability aspects and economic considerations.

Entry requirements

General entry requirements + Mathematics 3c or Mathematics D, Physics 1a or 1b1 + 1b2. Or: Mathematics Further level 1c, Physics level 1b or level 1a2
