Education facts

Code: TMIEA

The programme is a one-year master’s programme (60 credits) offered within the subject field of energy technology. It comprises of nine advanced-level courses and one degree project, all taught in English. The courses are offered in the field of energy technology (30 credits) and building technology (30 credits). The goal of the programme is to prepare students for the work in the interdisciplinary field of building technology and energy technology and/or for the participation in associated fields of research. The programme introduces students to the fundamentals of building energy engineering: the effects of the building envelope, the role of human thermal comfort, and the influence of the sun on the energy use of buildings. In our professional, state-of-the-art, courses students will learn about many aspects of the energy-efficient design of buildings and building physics. Utilising IDA Indoor Climate and Energy software, they will gain an understanding of the impact of different materials and various energy conservation measures on the building energy use, while also gaining essential understanding of the benefits and limitations of building performance simulation. Students will also learn about the essential components and design strategies of low-energy buildings, such as low-energy HVAC systems and passive solar buildings. So that students broaden their perspective, they are introduced to the wider—societal, environmental and economic—context of building energy efficiency. They are given the opportunity to learn how the achievable energy and environmental efficiency of a building is the function of its physical and social environment, and how the different aspects are interrelated. By the end of the programme, they will be knowledgeable about various environmental and sustainability assessment methods. The programme concludes with the writing of a thesis. The thesis work can be carried out at the university or, by approval, at a business or other organisation in Sweden or abroad.

Entry requirements

Bachelor of Science degree from building-, construction-, or energy engineering related fields (such as building, energy, civil, mechanical or architectural engineering) of at least 180 credits and English 6/English level 2
