The course deals with Russian folklore, its most important genres, characters and motifs and the development of these over time. Students read a selection of texts in translation which are discussed from a scholarly perspective. The course includes the study of the relationship between folklore and modern popular culture, as well as traditional rituals and the reflection of these in contemporary Russian culture and everyday life. The course also deals with the relationship between Slavic pagan beliefs and the Christian faith. In addition the course introduces the scholarly traditions relating to Slavic folklore.
