The theme course Change and variation in modern English discusses the changing nature of the English language. You will learn what the vocabulary, phrases and grammar look like in different varieties of English, and how these are changing over time. You will learn how to use corpora, modern databases of texts, to independently study the English language. You will discover that the English language is even richer than you previously thought. This theme courses is closely connected to a rich corpus-linguistic research tradition at Linnaeus University. The theme course Discourse Analysis presents various models for discourse analysis and focuses specifically on Internet discourse and computer mediated discourse analysis. During the course, you will learn to independently collect Internet data and analyze it using the computer-mediated discourse analysis method. You will also learn how to independently and critically review, account for and discuss current scientific articles in the research area and link current research results to your own research. The term ends with the writing of a BA thesis. This is the most important and rewarding course during your studies at the BA level. In cooperation with your supervisor, you will be able to deepen your knowledge on a specific topic and independently perform a small-scale research project. You will improve those skills that are both useful in the job market and for your personal development: the ability of working independently, thinking critically, keeping deadlines and handling and presenting information.
