This course deals with the principles of European human rights law. First, philosophical aspects and ideologies behind human rights in Europe are considered. The focus then shifts to organisations in Europe and their functions with regards to the advancement and implementation of human rights norms. Particular emphasis is given to the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights and the European Union. Using conventions and other legal documents as starting points, civil and political rights as well as economic, social and cultural rights are discussed and analysed.
