This course focuses on the history of Sweden from the Viking era to the death of Charles XII and the end of the Great Northern War (circa 1721). Swedish identity is problematized by discussing indigenous peoples, immigration, and the position of Finland in the Swedish realm. Religious changes from Old Norse and Saami religion, to the establishment of the Catholic Church, the Reformation, and Lutheran Orthodoxy are also discussed.
