Tourism is more than travel or a single industry. It is a complex socio-ecological phenomenon linked to human mobility. Tourism both shapes and is shaped by environmental, social, economic, technological, and political processes. Therefore, master’s-level studies provide the in-depth knowledge and analytical skills required to understand, manage, and develop tourism in a sustainable and strategic way. The master’s programme Tourism and Sustainability gives in-depth knowledge about how to evaluate tourism and plan for future tourism from a sustainability perspective. The programme offers courses in social sciences and business that are related to tourism and sustainability. It explores topics like justice, ethics, business models, destination development, community development and environmental studies. Students are trained to become critical thinkers and thus the programme equips them with a critical understanding of tourism and the world around them. Students are offered diverse learning opportunities with a strong focus on experiential learning, individual projects, thesis writing, company visits, field observations, and problem-based assignments. Students have the possibility to do an internship as part of their course load, take electives at the School of Business and Economics, work on individual projects, study abroad, and meet world-renown scholars in their courses. All these options enable students to explore their own interests and career plans during their studies. Possible career paths include work as a destination developer, tourism strategist, urban or regional planner with a focus on the visitor economy, sustainability consultant, project manager in tourism development, analyst within the visitor economy, policy officer in the public sector, as well as roles within non-governmental organisations and international development projects. Students become prepared for a career in Sweden and in international contexts. The programme also prepares students for doctoral studies.
General entry requirements for studies at the second-cycle level and specific entry requirements: - at least 30 credits in tourism studies or in Business Administration, or - at least 90 credits in another social science main field of study, as well as - English 6 Or: English level 2, or the equivalent.
