The course deals with fundamental areas in radiation and plasma physics necessary for the understanding of the radiation emanating from the outer parts (atmospheres) of stars. Astronomical observations cover the electromagnetic spectrum from X-rays to microwaves.

In the course you will study basic properties of stars and their atmospheres: effects of temperature, pressure chemical composition and stellar rotation. The solar atmosphere. Stellar spectra and formation of spectral lines. Convection and granulation. Thermodynamic equilibrium and departures from equilibrium. Oscillations and asteroseismology. Magnetism and magnetic activity cycles. Mass loss: stellar coronas and stellar winds.

För tillträde till kursen krävs 105 hp fysik och/eller matematik, vari ingår kunskaper motsvarande FYSB24 Atom- och molekylfysik, 7,5 hp. Grundläggande behörighet och Engelska 6/B.
Each offering has its own dates and conditions. Closed offerings are retained as history and do not mean that a new application is open.
