Interested in sustainable construction? This course gives you knowledge of bio-based building materials such as wood and plant fibre-based materials- their structure, properties, strengths and weaknesses for different applications.

The construction industry faces major challenges in reducing its climate impact. One approach is to use bio-based building materials such as timber, wood-based products and materials derived from plant fibres.

This course provides an in-depth understanding of these materials - their structure, properties, strengths and weaknesses in various building contexts. You will learn how these materials influence their material properties and how you can alter the properties of these materials. You will also gain knowledge on resistance to degradation of these materials as well as their environmental impact from a life cycle perspective.

The course can be taken as a stand-alone option and is ideal for students interested in material science and sustainable construction.

90 credits, of which 30 credits completed construction engineering courses (structural engineering, building physics, building technology, building materials) including a course in building materials, for example: VBM012, VBMA30, VBM611, VBMA35 or VBMA25). English 6/English level 2.
Each offering has its own dates and conditions. Closed offerings are retained as history and do not mean that a new application is open.
