<p>Explore law as a living social phenomenon shaped and contested by society. Examine how power, culture, and resistance shape legal systems. By engaging with socio-legal theories and real-world issues, you learn to critically study how law works, for whom it works, and where its limits lie. </p><p>In this course, you develop your understanding of sociology of law as a multidisciplinary research area. We cover concepts and perspectives that you will use to explore a range of topics in sociology of law. This allows you to learn to identify socio-legal issues and formulate relevant questions for an empirical study of the problems.</p><p>You will gain the ability to apply theoretical and empirical knowledge to analyse societal issues and legal developments at all levels. You will also be qualified to find and use socio-legal information to explain and compare contemporary social problems using relevant theories.</p><p>At the end of the course, you will have understood the possibilities and limitations of sociology of law.</p><p>The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, exercises, and seminars. The assessment of each module is based on written assignments and active participation in seminars, including oral presentations. Absence approved by the lecturer is to be compensated for by a written assignment. </p>

Entry requirements

To be admitted to the course, students must have at least Bachelor's degree including: 90 credits in the sociology of law or other relevant disciplines such as sociology, criminology, law, political science, social work, or the equivalent Oral and written proficiency in English equivalent to English 6/B from Swedish upper secondary school is a requirement. International qualifications will be assessed in accordance with national guidelines The student must also have passed the course SOLP01 Introduction to the Sociology of Law (15 credits), or equivalent courses
