This course examines how countries like Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam have industrialised and modernised, offering insights into one of the world’s most dynamic regions.</p><p>Emerging Asia offers a solid introduction to the historical and institutional foundations of economic development in East and Southeast Asia. Through a comparative lens, the course examines why countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Singapore succeeded in industrialising, while others faced setbacks.</p><p>You will work with key analytical frameworks such as the developmental state, export-led growth, and equitable growth. The course addresses structural changes such as agricultural modernisation, rural industrialisation, and regional integration, always grounded in empirical evidence and historical context.</p><p>This is a course for students who seek clarity and depth in understanding Asia’s economic transformation.
