<p>How can film and literature help you understand how people process major historical traumas? In this course, you explore post Soviet culture through Russian and Ukrainian films and texts, and gain insight into how identity, memory, and history are expressed in contemporary storytelling.</p><p>In this course, you study Russian and Ukrainian film and literature as expressions of culture and identity. After a brief introduction to 20th century Soviet film and literary history, you gain an overview of post Soviet cultural development. You see how both individual and collective experiences from the 20th century are portrayed in contemporary Russian and Ukrainian narratives - and how these shape views of society, memory, and identity. </p><p>This course gives you tools to understand a region that continues to undergo major political, cultural, and historical change, and it helps you develop your own analyses of both the present and the past. The course also constitutes a module within the course "Politics, Culture and Identity in Russia, Ukraine and Other Post Soviet States" (ÖCKB14, 15 credits).</p>
