<p>Discover how Greek evolved from the late Byzantine period to modern times. This course shows you how history, culture, and society shaped the language, giving you insight into the roots of today’s Greek and its rich linguistic journey.</p><p>This course is for you who have successfully completed 90 higher education credits in linguistics or literature, or the equivalent. The course is compulsory within the Master’s Programme in Languages and Linguistics (Modern Greek orientation), but may also be taken as an independent course.</p><p>The course gives you a clear picture of how Greek has developed from Antiquity to today, with a focus on the late Byzantine to modern period. You explore how sounds, grammar, and syntax changed, and how historical and social events shaped the language. You also learn how Greek vocabulary evolved and why new words appeared. </p><p>You get insight into the development of different dialects in Byzantine and modern Greek, and how they connect to the long tradition of diglossia, where spoken and written forms differed. By the end, you can explain the main stages of Greek and understand how language and society influence each other.</p>
Successful completion of 90 ECTS credits in Modern Greek, Ancient and Byzantine Greek, or the equivalent.
