Education facts

Code: NGEA03

This course gives you knowledge of techniques for collecting information about various phenomena in the landscape, primarily through aerial image interpretation. You will learn about the image interpretation process and areas of application for photographic remote sensing in research, society and private activities. During the course you will work with images from different film types as well as digital image and map data.

Remote sensing is the common name for methods used to study the Environment around us without actually being in contact with the study objects. Examples of remote sensing methods are photography, echo sounding and radar. The course gives you knowledge about how to use mainly aerial photographs to collect information about different features of a landscape. In order to be able to interpret what you see in an image you need to know what factors that influence the information content. Thus, we start the course with a theoretical section dealing with, for example:

radiation theory,

image characteristics,

reflection characteristics of different objects

In the beginning of the course you will use printed images from different parts of the World and from different timing. The aim is that you should get an opinion about the information quality to expect from different types of images. The image material consists of black and white, colour and infra-red images. You will learn to select the appropriate image type for a given task.

Today image handling is most often done by computers which makes the combination of images with other data sources such as maps easier. During the course you will work with digital image and map data from different origins. You will also learn to use computers classify different objects on aerial photographs and satellite images. The course contains several Projects that are based on group work. One of the projects in the later part of the course is set as a realistic assignment where you together with your class mates plan, perform and report a larger project. This project includes a couple of days of field work in the eastern parts of south Sweden.

http://www.nateko.lu.se/ngea03
