<p>The course covers the basic principles of light interaction with biological tissue found in living beings, organic matter and our natural surroundings. Understanding this interaction allows to select appropriate techniques and design optimal instrumentation for probing the key features for classifying or grade the health/quality of diverse biological samples.</p><p>The methods covered in the course grasp spatial scales from microscopic cellular level, through the macroscopic photomigration regime to remote sensing of our biosphere. For enhanced understanding and to gain practical know-how, the course includes a creative hands-on project where student groups develop a simple setup for a biophotonic measurement technique, apply it to a selected sample and present the investigation at the end of the course.</p> <p>The course provides the student with knowledge combined with a unique toolset of methods valuable both for development and application of modern photonics in lifescience.</p>

Entry requirements

Entry to the course requires English 6/B or the equivalent and 90 credits scientific studies in physics, mathematics and including knowledge equivalent to: FYSA13 Introduction to University Physics, with Optics, Waves and Quantum Physics, 7.5 credits, and FYSB24 Atomic and Molecular Physics, 7.5 credits. The courses FYSN14 Lasers, 7.5 credits, and FYST14 Atomic and Molecular spectroscopy, 7.5 credits, are recommended but are not compulsory.
