This course explores the world of Eastern Christian iconography. Throughout the course we will reflect on the theological and anthropological foundations of Eastern Christian iconography. We will do this by surveying the historical development of the Eastern Christian iconographic tradition from early Christianity to the modern period, with particular emphasis on the iconographic types of Jesus, Mary, saints, and on liturgical feasts. The course incorporates rich visual presentations, reading materials (ancient source texts and contemporary studies), and additional learning resources.
General admission requirements for university studies. Students taking part in the course as a part of their Bachelor’s degree program must have completed Course A, Introduction in Philosophy and Theology (30 ECTS credits). Students taking part in the course as a freestanding course are expected to have corresponding prior knowledge.
Each offering has its own dates and conditions. Closed offerings are retained as history and do not mean that a new application is open.
