This course introduces a range of theories and research within the sociology of consumption applied to our understanding of (un)sustainable lifestyles. It addresses the social life of consumption, such as the role of identities, social relations, and the role of status in consumption. It examines the power of consumer norms and how overconsumption is normalized in everyday life. Critical perspectives and reflections are integrated in the course on how we can learn to consume less and facilitate a movement towards “sufficiency”.
30 credits in Sociology.
