På kursen läses och problematiseras tolkningar av centrala verk i barn- och ungdomslitteraturens historia, framför allt knutna till modern teori och kritik. Kategorier som saga, flick- och pojkbok, fantasy och bilderbok belyses utifrån verk fördelade under perioden 1700- till 1900-tal. Barn- och ungdomslitterär traditionsbildning diskuteras med utgångspunkt i teoretiska begrepp som exempelvis kanon, intertextualitet och genus.
