The course includes an introduction to modern sociolinguistic theory and methodology with applications to Spanish-speaking areas. Sociolinguistic research fields and the basic concepts are presented. The course covers the following areas: linguistic variation, bilingualism from a societal and individual perspective, language change and code switch, gender and accommodation theory. How social significance is expressed through language and established in interaction is also discussed.
Interaction and discourse, 7.5 ECTS credits, or equivalent. Swedish Upper Secondary School course English 6 or equivalent.
