I kursen uppmärksammas och behandlas historiska och samhälleliga aspekter på hur specialpedagogisk verksamhet och specialpedagogiska professioner formats, styrts och förändrats. Centrala specialpedagogiska teorier, begrepp och perspektiv introduceras, diskuteras och problematiseras. Särskilt uppmärksammas deras betydelse för den pedagogiska verksamhetens utformning och genomförande. Kunskap om det specialpedagogiska forskningsfältet samt relationen mellan vetenskap, beprövad erfarenhet och yrkesutövning introduceras. Dessutom behandlas barns kognitiva och socioemotionella utveckling samt språk- och begreppsutveckling från förskoleåldern till tonåren.
