Unlike clothing, which is a material product, fashion is an abstract and symbolic value, with a constantly shifting expression. This course highlights how fashion is produced, focusing on the modern and late-modern eras, viewed from a global perspective. How is fashion created as a marker of identity? What is the relationship between the fashion system and textile production, i.e. between the activities that give fashion its value and the creation of material garments? By clarifying the deeper mechanisms and continuously changing cultural contexts of these phenomena, this course offers a more nuanced understanding of the current fashion industry and contemporary consumer culture.
