Kursen ger grundläggande kunskaper om den moderna ekonomins framväxt. Kursen tar sin utgångspunkt i 1800-talets industrialiseringsprocesser och följer den ekonomiska utvecklingen såväl globalt som i Sverige, fram till 2000-talets början. Kursens litteratur och föreläsningar ger en översiktlig bild av den historiska utvecklingen ur ett ekonomiskt perspektiv, samtidigt som historiska förlopp problematiseras i relation till centrala begrepp som institutioner, levnadsstandard, resursfördelning och hållbar utveckling.
