Many different microorganisms (bacteria, viruses and fungi) cause infections in humans. Antibiotics can be vital to treat infections, and the fact that more and more bacteria have developed resistance to conventional antibiotics is one of the greatest threats to our health. The course provides knowledge of how different microorganisms spread between people, how they cause disease and which drugs are available for treatment. The course also provides knowledge of how laboratories identify and characterize these microorganisms and how to determine their sensitivity to various drugs. The course explains how bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics, how such resistance may spread between bacterias, and how to counteract this development in healthcare and in society.
