This international Master's programme focuses on sustainable development in coastal areas – dynamic spaces where land meets sea, and where environmental, social, and economic challenges intersect. Students explore key topics, such as natural resource management, marine and coastal planning, climate change, and sustainability transformations. The programme takes a transdisciplinary approach, integrating natural and social sciences, and offers field-based, real-world learning in the unique coastal environment of Gotland. Students gain practical skills in systems thinking, sustainability analyses, governance and management, statistics and scenario building, with a strong emphasis on research-based and applied teaching. Courses are closely connected to ongoing research and include case studies from the Baltic Sea region and globally. The second year includes options for a longer thesis or a combination of a shorter thesis and internship. Graduates are equipped to work with sustainability challenges in coastal and marine contexts, both locally and globally. Career paths include public authorities, environmental consultancies, international organisations, and research. The language of instruction is English.
*Academic requirements* A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. *Language requirements* Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. This requirement can be met either by achieving the required score on an internationally recognised test, or by previous upper secondary or university studies in some countries.
Each offering has its own dates and conditions. Closed offerings are retained as history and do not mean that a new application is open.
