The course provides fundamental knowledge about the nervous system, ranging from synapses and communication between nerve cells to complex functions such as emotion and cognition. While focusing on human neurobiology, a comparison between species is included. The course includes both development, anatomy, and function, for example, the different cell types, neurotransmitters, neurotransmission, the central (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous systems, sensory and motor functions, the concept of neuronal circuitries, reward- and aversion circuitries, learning and memory, pain- and appetite regulation. Furthermore, the course explores how these functions are integrated into behaviour and skills, as well as knowledge gained from various types of disorders and environmental exposures that affect the nervous system.
60 credits in biology including 1) Molecular Biology and Genetics (10 credits), and Cell Biology (15 credits, course taken, 5 credits completed), or 2) Biology A: Patterns and Processes (22.5 credits) or Biology A: Patterns, Processes and Science Education (22.5 credits), and Cell Biology (15 credits, course taken, 5 credits completed).
Each offering has its own dates and conditions. Closed offerings are retained as history and do not mean that a new application is open.
