Philology applied to Old Norse texts is a discipline that branches into both linguistic and literary subfields. Graphonomy, palaeography, and grammar in a broad sense are combined with hermeneutics and textual scholarship, and together with historical auxiliary sciences they form the tools used to explain what a text says, what it means, and how the text and its content relate to other texts and to society. Within the framework of the course, we discuss how Old Norse texts have been edited and treated. The aim of these discussions is to critically examine and evaluate both traditional philology and New Philology.
