Written Swahili literature dates back at least four hundred years. Many new novels, short stories, poems and plays in Swahili are published annually. In this course you will read, analyse and discuss literary texts in different genres, as well as texts on Swahili literature, together with the other course participants. In seminars and lectures, we will explore the history and development of Swahili literature, central themes, authors and their works in a literary and cultural context. All the literature we read is in English, so you don't need any knowledge of Swahili to take the course, but all literary texts are also available in Swahili. Your and the other course participants' active participation and contributions form the basis for the examination of the course. **Outline for distance course:** The course is IT-based and is given in the university's course portal Studium and in Zoom. Access to a computer with speakers, microphone, camera and broadband connection is required to follow the course. You are expected to have your camera on during lectures and seminars to facilitate interaction.
