This course is designed to expand your insights into the regional variation of the English language around the world. You will study linguistic patterns of such varieties as Irish English, Australian English, and Jamaican English in their spoken and written forms. You will also learn about English as a lingua franca and about some English-based pidgins and creoles. A portion of the course will be dedicated to a specific regional variety and its linguistic features in its socio-cultural settings. You will carry out an independent research project based on empirical data, collected from such sources as language corpora, transcriptions, audio-visual material, and social media.
