Archaeology and Ancient History: Theory, Method and Ethics on Advanced Level

<p>Your perspective plays an important role when conducting a study. In this course, you learn about different theories and methods in archaeological and ancient history research, and how they can influence analysis and results. You also discuss ethics in research.</p><p>This course introduces you to various theories and methods used in research in archaeology and ancient history. The course focuses on the relationship between theory and practice, and how different perspectives can influence analysis and results in a study. </p><p>You examine different theoretical approaches to studying empirical material in order to develop a critical understanding of the relationship between theory, method and material. At the same time, you learn how material culture from different geographical regions and time periods can be interpreted using different perspectives and methods of analysis. The course provides you with an overview of the latest methodological developments in documentation, analysis and archiving.</p><p>In addition, the course encourages you to reflect on the professional role of archaeologists and the role of archaeology in society. You learn about ethical aspects of the scientific process and discuss ethical considerations related to methodology and perspective. You also examine ethical issues related to the use of history and how archaeological knowledge is communicated. </p><p>This course is part of the Master's programme in Archaeology and Ancient History - Theory and Practice, but can also be taken as a stand-alone course.</p>
