Barbarians and Romans

<p>How often do you think about the Roman Empire? About the effect the Romans had on their surroundings? Or what it was like to meet Romans? In this course you learn how the Roman Empire came in contact with other cultures and how these cultural encounters transpired. </p><p>This course explores how the Roman Empire interacted with cultures beyond its borders, with a special focus on the Germanic and Celtic peoples between 100 BCE and 400 CE. You will examine how these cultural encounters were expressed both in material objects and in ways of life. The course helps you understand and discuss key concepts such as imperialism, views of civilization, ethnicity, social identity, Romanization, and cultural hybridity.</p><p> </p>
