Biomedicine - Master's Programme

<p>The programme primarily focuses on genetic causes of illness and how biomedical and digital tools can be used to investigate these. During the final degree project of 30 credits, you will independently apply your knowledge to address a current research problem in the field of biomedicine.<br></p><h2>The focus of your studies</h2><p>The programme is one year long and the first two courses you study are Human Genetics and Translational Genetics. These courses provide a broad introduction to the field of human genetics, and how the interaction between genetics and environment affects human characteristics and diseases.</p><p>The following course focuses on biomedical and digital tools. You will also learn methods for analysing biomedical research questions and data management, including the analysis of large-scale genetic data. This course also serves as preparation for the degree project.</p><p>The second semester is dedicated to the degree project where you will conduct an individual biomedical scientific experiment. There is an opportunity to carry out the degree project at a company or another university.</p><p>The studies combine lectures with laboratory work and computer exercises.&nbsp;</p><h2>Career opportunities</h2><p>You can work in biomedical research and development at a university, or you can find employment in healthcare with genetic and/or laboratory activities, or in government agencies.</p><p>There are opportunities to work in innovation, development, production, marketing, and sales, as well as patent issues in pharmaceutical, biotech, or life science companies.</p><p>You can also specialise in communication or journalism within the life science field.</p><h2>Opportunities for further studies</h2><p>After graduation, you can continue with postgraduate studies.</p><h2>Research within this field</h2><p>Research in the field of biomedicine is advancing rapidly, and genetics and the analysis of genetic data are important cornerstones of biomedical research. The research areas for the <a href="https://www.his.se/en/research/digital-health-research-dhear/translational-medicine-trim/">Translational medicine (TRIM) research group</a> at the University of Skövde currently include rare genetic diseases, diabetes, celiac disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, sleep apnea, cancer, and mental health in the digital society.</p><h2>Opportunites for international studies</h2><p>You will have the opportunity to study abroad during the second semester’s degree project.</p>
