Development Studies C

An education in Development Studies will increase your understanding of political, economic, and social development from a global perspective. At Uppsala University, development studies is offered at the Department of Government, which gives it a clear political science profile, with a focus on the politics of development, good governance, and policy analysis. In this way, development studies at Uppsala University addresses the increasing demand for political science competence in the international labour market. Courses in development studies provide knowledge about the basic theoretical development discourses as well as about reality-based development challenges. The aim is to contribute nuanced analytical perspectives on development processes in national, regional, and international contexts. Development Studies C gives opportunities for specialisation in development studies. The course contains three sub-parts: methods, an electable specialisation module and independent work with a research essay. The first module is a methods course introducing various research methods. Here some basic methodological concepts will be examined and the different stages of the research process will be discussed. Qualitative as well as quantitative methods of analysis will be introduced during the course. Special attention will be given to quantitative methods. The second module gives a choice between a number of specialised courses. The third and final part consists of carrying out and specifying an independent study in the area of development studies. The specific topic is chosen by you and elaborated on in consultation with an advisor. The work is to be presented at a final seminar in the form of a written essay.
