The course comprises three course modules. Module 1 - English Linguistics III: History of English from a Sociolinguistic Perspective (7.5 ECTS cr) This module covers the basics of English language history from a sociolinguistic perspective, with a special emphasis on phenomena that can be observed in modern English and current trends in the development of English. In addition, students read research publications which treat English language history from a sociolinguistic perspective, and learn about possible research questions and methods in the field. Module 2 - English Literature and Theory (7.5 ECTS cr) In this module, students apply literary theory to texts from the English-speaking world. The module highlights the relationship between literature and society through studies of literary and cultural theories and perspectives, such as postcolonial, Marxist, ecocritical, and gender-based theories. Through analysing texts, students acquire familiarity with theory and develop an awareness of the significance and function of literature. Module 3 - Degree Project (15 ECTS cr) This module offers a choice of two specialisations. Students carry out a research project and write a thesis in either English linguistics or English literature. Instruction is in the form of seminars and supervision. Supervision can be provided individually or in groups. The module is concluded with a mandatory seminar where students present and defend their independent projects and serve as peer reviewers of other students' work. Supervision is provided for the course duration. Reregistered students are offered supervision if circumstances permit.
