English: Cognitive Linguistics

<p>Explore the connection between thought and language. In this course, you delve into cognitive linguistics and examine how we shape and understand the world through language - drawing on both classical theory and modern research.</p><p>In this course, you are introduced to cognitive linguistics - a field of research that studies the relationship between language and thought. You learn about key theories in the field, such as cognitive semantics, cognitive grammar, conceptual metaphors and how bodily experiences influence our language use. </p><p>The course combines classical philosophical perspectives with modern experimental research. Together, they provide you with the tools to explore two main questions: which thought processes underlie how we use and understand language, and how language in turn shapes the way we think. </p><p>During the course, you read academic articles and book chapters, as well as engage in practical work with methods used in cognitive linguistics. You practise formulating research questions, carrying out simple analyses and conducting a small study of your own. </p><p>Through discussions and reflection, you develop your ability to understand the role of language in human cognition and to view language as more than just words, namely as part of how we perceive and organise the world.</p>
