Friction Stir Welding

This course gives an applied introduction to Friction Stir Welding (FSW) as a solid-state joining process for metallic materials. It provides an overview of FSW equipment, tool design, and the use of rotating tools to join materials without melting. Proper use of equipment is discussed together with the possibilities of joint and process design. The effects of process parameters and material properties on weld quality, microstructure, and mechanical performance are discussed, evaluated, and, where applicable, demonstrated through laboratory-based or case-oriented activities at University West. Methods for process monitoring and quality control are introduced, including their possibilities and limitations for inline observation and control. The course is mainly delivered through distance learning in a flexible, web-based format with two physical meetings. Some course meetings are compulsory. The course is suitable for students and professionals who want to gain practical and applied knowledge of Friction Stir Welding as a complement to prior theoretical knowledge or industrial experience. This course has been developed in collaboration with industrial partners within the framework of educational development projects.
