Gender, sexuality, and psychology

The aim of the course is to introduce theories of and research on gender, sexuality, and psychology in gender studies, and to give an introduction to feminist and queer psychology. On the basis of knowledge about gender, sexuality, and psychology developed in gender studies, students acquire an understanding of the interplay between gender, sexuality, and psychological development. Students also develop skills required to reflect upon and analyse psychological research and practice based on an awareness of gender, class, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, and disability. The course is intended for current and future professionals in different areas of psychology who want to expand their understanding of the interplay between gender, sexuality, and psychology. Students gain insights into gender studies perspectives on the relationships between psychological development, sexuality, and gender. The course also covers the development of feminist and queer psychology and recent research in gender studies which focuses on gender, sexuality, and psychology. In addition, the course examines how gender and sexuality intersect with other social categories such as class, ethnicity, religion, and disability, and the significance of such intersectionality in different psychological contexts. While the course focuses on perspectives on gender, sexuality, and psychology relevant for gender studies, it also outlines a foundation for critical reflection upon practical issues in psychological treatment contexts, with a focus on gender and sexuality.
