Geomatics: Applied GIS

<p>The course consists of lectures, computer-based assignments, and a final project. Lectures provide theoretical knowledge and research reproduction methodology, while assignments focus on applying GIS methods to real-world problems. Participation in all non-lecture components is mandatory. There is no final exam for the course as the core component is a group-based project. Additionally, students engage in peer review, critically evaluating each other’s project reports and providing constructive feedback. The assessment is based on the project work and peer-review tasks.</p><p>The course provides theoretical and practical knowledge of advanced GIS methods and their applications in environmental sciences, spatial analysis, and decision-making. A central theme of the course is research reproducibility, where students gain hands-on experience in replicating GIS-based studies, understanding the associated challenges, and applying structured methodologies.</p> <p>Key topics include advanced spatial analysis techniques, such as multi-criteria decision analysis, and GIS automation and programming, particularly using ArcGIS Pro and ArcPy. As a core component, students will reproduce a case study from published research, covering the entire workflow, from data collection and processing to GIS analysis, programming, and result interpretation. Additionally, the course strengthens students' ability to critically assess GIS methodologies through sensitivity analysis, discussions on the reliability of analytical methods, and peer review of each other's work.</p>
