GIS: Geographical Databases

<p>This is an internet based course in English where you will learn how conceptual modeling in UML, databases and SQL works. The course also gives you examples of how the database environment in a GIS program is structured and what standards and freely available geographical databases are available.</p><p>This course allows you to explore theoretical and practical concepts of geographical databases. That includes design, implementation and usage of geographical databases. The course starts with general database terminologies such as DBMS, SQL, ACID, etc. Then it concentrates on steps for design and implementation of a database. This includes:</p> <ul> <li>requirement analysis</li> <li>conceptual modelling</li> <li>internal modelling and physical implementation</li> </ul> <h3>Course content</h3> <p>The lectures describe the theory behind relational databases (SQL, normal forms, etc.), object-oriented databases (object classes, inheritance, etc.) and storage of geographical data in databases. Furthermore, the course contains practical issues regarding storing geographical data in files versus storing data in databases.
