GIS: Research Methodology

<p>In this course you will learn to define, plan and implement a project at an academic level. The project is intended to be your degree project, but can also be an academic report. The course is suitable to be taken in connection with, or at the same time as your project.</p><p>In preparation for the Masters thesis this course will develop your ability to define and plan the theses work. You will also train in assessing and critically evaluate scientific work produced by others. A certain amount of basic scientific theory development will also be treated during the course. Different tools, as Internet search and communication techniques are also a concern of this course.</p> <h3>Course content</h3> <p>This is a completely online course in English which consists of six modules</p> <ul> <li>Project plan. During the course, you will acquire knowledge that leads to a project plan for a scientific work at master's level.</li> <li>Library knowledge. In this module you will learn different tools and methods for literature search.</li> <li>Theory of Science. This deals with basic scientific theory as well as concepts such as realism, idealism, empiricism and positivism.</li> <li>Research methodology. The module deals with both quantitative and qualitative methods, interview techniques and participatory observation methods.</li> <li>Argumentation theory. You gain knowledge in identifying and analyzing sustainable and unsustainable arguments in, for example, text material.</li> <li>Report writing. Here you get knowledge in scientific report writing and how to work with outline, structure and content.</li> </ul>
