Grading and assessing - music teachers

The course aims to provide in-depth understanding of how assessment and grading can be used as pedagogical tools for students' development and learning, with a particular focus on assessment in the subject of music. The connections between planning, teaching, examination, and learning are analysed, taking students' different situations and motivation for learning into account, and problematised based on, for example, subject traditions. Special attention is given to various assessment principles and how they can be implemented through formative and summative assessment. Assessment and grading are discussed in an international context, comparing different grading systems and exploring the significance of international assessments for national education policy. The course includes practical workshops where students work with assessment materials and critically discuss different types of assessment frameworks. Additionally, students have the opportunity to practice various aspects of grading in the subject of music, such as assessing students' musical performances, creating their own assessment materials, compiling grades, and communicating assessments.
